Kobold Character by butterfrog Kobold Character by butterfrog
This is a "bonus" Kobold I did for Halls of the Mountain King. Originally it was a "Senior Patrons only" image, but since Mr Baur decided to share it with all patrons, I'll share it with you all too ;)

This fellow is not the regular Kobold, he's nicely equipped and lost its tail to a nasty -non-commented- accident.

My first "serious" kobold, done some 3 months ago

I hope you like it!

I'm not very fond of the "new" reptile kobolds... (I met them whem they were doggy-like scum; and fought dozens of them... ;) )
Anyway, have to admit this guy of yours is pretty cool. Gotta fave it to make it justice.
After that, well, we'll meet in the tunnels... and we'll see who's better with the knife...

Serious or not, he still looks so cute!

Kobolds are the only race capable of winning a fight solely through determination, their own sense of self-importance, and adorable pluck. :D

I like the kukri a lot! And the details you added like the leather wrapped feet, the ring on his horn and the "eyebrow" piercing are very nice touches!

Very nice indeed. He's got lots of character. I can imagine you'll be doing a fair few kobolds these days. My one comment would be that darkening the back leg and arm might help to push them into the background a little. At the moment they read as stongly as the foreground elements.

Yes, my shading back then (and still now) its a bit poor... I'm working on that

Not at all - that shading's great and the style you have going does give equal importance to all elements which is great for front on shots where each element is separate from the others. The difference here is that the elements behind are butting up against the front elements and there's no clear stylistic clue to push them into the background. Reducing the level of detail, reducing the lineweight of the elements or laying down an overall tone to darken them would all work to help separate the foreground and background elements. However they are all different techniques to your style. I certainly wouldn't say that your shading is poor at all. Quite the opposite in fact.

I'm strating to shade a litle heavier now, giving more depth perception. You'll see it on the 4e HotMK art. I hope it has improved :D

That's great; I could have used some mean kobold art a few weeks ago.
I'd like to see different varieties based around the chromatic dragon heritage.

I know PF dragons have to have a different look from Todd Lockwood's D&D versions, but I love black dragons appearance most of all, because of the curving horns that remind me of Snaggletooth, the Motorhead mascot.

I'd love to do the chromatic-kobold series...eventually. Darn, now I hope I could draw faster to do some projects on my own :D
